Seeking an alternative crop, James Taylor, a British planter, pioneered tea cultivation in 1867 on the Loolecondera estate in Kandy, which eventually spread to Nuwara Eliya. The success of Taylor’s experiment marked the beginning of a new chapter for Sri Lanka, positioning it as one of the world’s leading tea producers.

Plucking: The journey of tea begins with the delicate hand-plucking of the top two leaves and a bud from the Camellia sinensis plant. Skilled pluckers, predominantly women, traverse the steep slopes with baskets slung over their backs, carefully selecting the freshest leaves.
Withering: The plucked leaves are then spread out to wither, losing moisture and becoming pliable for further processing.
Rolling: The withered leaves are rolled to break their cell walls, releasing essential oils and initiating the oxidation process, which is crucial for developing the tea’s flavor.
Oxidation: The rolled leaves are left to oxidize, turning a deep copper color. This step is vital for black tea production, while green and white teas undergo minimal to no oxidation.
Drying: The oxidized leaves are dried to halt the oxidation process, locking in the desired flavor profile.
Sorting and Grading: Finally, the dried leaves are sorted and graded based on size and quality before being packaged for sale.
